Our history

Once upon a time...

The Rohan Hotel, formerly known as Hotel des Rohan and then as Cardinal de Rohan Hotel, is named after a distinguished cardinal who was the bishop of Strasbourg. He served as an ambassador to Vienna in 1772, became involved in the famous Queen’s Necklace Affair, was arrested by order of the king, and eventually imprisoned in the Bastille in 1785.

The building that now houses the hotel was rebuilt in 1963 following the bombings of the last war that affected Strasbourg and destroyed the old building (the Vieil-hôpital street, behind the hotel, remains one of the most visible examples of bomb impacts in the area). During the 1970s, it became one of the most beautiful establishments in the Alsatian city.

The Rohan Hotel enjoys a privileged location right in the center of Strasbourg, a city located in eastern France, on the left bank of the Rhine. It is the capital of the Grand Est region and the Bas-Rhin department, and it also serves as the headquarters of the Council of Europe (since 1949) and the European Parliament (since 1992).
